First Day of Census

December 1, 2018 @ 6:00 am - 5:00 pm

The ACS/LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project begins its 36th consecutive season today.

A dedicated team of citizen scientists will sit on the patio of the Point Vicente Interpretive Center (PVIC), 138 feet above kelp beds and rocky shoreline, with a seafloor that drops off abruptly nearshore, collecting data on gray whales and other cetaceans, including identifications, counts, and behaviors. The effort is conducted during daylight hours until late May.

No prior experience is necessary to volunteer. We will train you and experienced observers anchor all shifts. Please contact Census Director Alisa Schulman-Janiger ([email protected]) for training and observation schedule.
